Lloydminster and District United Way is giving local businesses and their customers an opportunity to support local non-profits with the Paint the District Red campaign.

“Everyone is looking for different ways to raise money within our community and this is just our way to get the businesses community involved as well as their customers and help out the people in need in our community,” says President and campaign chair Brian Hanterman

Businesses can participate in the initiative in October by sponsoring a product of their choosing with a certain amount of the purchase going back to United Way or by offering up a percentage of a week’s sales. The four-member agencies that will receive a portion of the funds raised through the initiative include the Lloydminster Rescue Squad, LABIS, the Lloydminster Sexual Assualt services and the Olive Tree.

“50 per cent of the money we raise each year goes to these groups for a two-year span, and then the other 50 per cent goes towards initiatives we feel are lacking in the community such as, this year, we’re giving $13,000 to the citizens of Lloydminster for swimming lessons for two kids per family and $5,000 for the same in Vermilion and Wainwright.”

After the inaugural year brought in just under $1000, Hanterman looks to iron out some kinks from last year in order to make this an annual event.

“The first year was mildly successful we’re hoping to build on that this year and grow it each year going forward.”

Residents can support the Paint the District Red campaign by purchasing items and services from local businesses that are listed on United Way’s Facebook page.

Hanterman says the annual Breakfast Day with United Way is also taking place in October where businesses and community members purchase breakfast sandwiches that will be ordered and delivered through the organization.

Last year, Lloydminster and District United Way raised over $70,000 for 12 non-profits in Lloydminster.
