SPCA adoption event exceeds goal

Many residents acquired some new friends this weekend as the Lloydminster and District SPCA adopted every available cat during its Empty Our Shelter event.  Community Outreach Manager Becca Lawrence says in total, 31 cats arrived at their new homes this weekend. She says the shelter is ecstatic to exceed the adoption goal.

“Initially I wasn’t sure how many cats we had available, but to go past that 20 mark that I was talking about is definitely a good feeling because even last year we had around the same numbers and we had at least five leftover.”

Lawrence believes the clear-out event has many beneficial factors including community members who care for stray animals when the shelter is overcrowded. The event also clears room for the fall, which is considered the seconded largest kitten intake of the year.

“Obviously, cost-wise too, it’s nicer for us as well, not to have that many numbers, but we’ll have plenty kittens in foster starting to trickling back in too, so those spay and neuter numbers are getting back up there again.”

The shelter isn’t back to capacity yet, but Lawrence says it is expected by the end of the week due to the large waiting list. So far, the shelter has received five cats and two litter of kittens this week.

The SPCA is now accepting cats from its waiting lists. Anyone with questions and contact the SPCA at 780-875-2809.
