Crops continue to mature, farmers prepare for harvest

Crops continue to mature as local producers prepare for harvest in the coming weeks, according to Saskatchewan’s weekly crop report. Less than one per cent of the crop combined and less than one per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut, which is just under the five-year average.

The majority of the northwest region, including Lloydminster, received rain this week ranging from small to large amounts. The Meadow Lake area has now accumulated the most rainfall since April 1 after collecting 19mm this week. The North Battleford area received 12mm of precipitation this week.

Crop land topsoil moisture is rated as 66 per cent adequate and 25 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as  62 per cent adequate and 30 per cent short. Crop District 9AW, which includes North Battleford, is reporting that 56 per cent of crop land and 67 per cent of hay land and pasture is short topsoil moisture at this time.

Livestock producers have worked with the weather to make great haying progress. Light frost has been the main cause of crop damage in the region this week.

Farmers are busy haying, hauling grain and getting equipment ready for harvest.
