Lloydminster rallies in heels against violence

Lloydminster Sexual Assualt Services looks towards the community to make noise about a tough subject. Walk A Mile In Her Shoes, hosted every two years, raises awareness for those who have experienced sexual or physical violence and abuse.

“This provides us with an opportunity to open up a conversation and a way of offering that education and also at the same time supporting survivors or anybody that may have been impacted by sexual violence,” says LASA community relations coordinator, Carly Pollard.

The route has changed for the fourth year of the event. The walk will start from the Synergy Credit Union and loop around Hwy. 16. Pollard says the new route provides a larger space and will give the event more visibility.

“The changes that have happened [to the route] are much of a reflection of how our centre has changed,” says Pollard. “We definitely are able, at this Walk A Mile, to showcase that growth of staff, community partnerships, the structural upgrades and services that have grown over time.”

Registration and shoe fitting start at 5 p.m. with the walk starting at 6 p.m. LASA will provide the red high heels for the men who have registered but also welcome participants to bring their own shoes.

Registration costs $25 which covers the dinner and will go towards LASA’s programming and services. To register for the event as an individual or as a team visit www.walkamilelloydminster.com before the walk on Sept. 12.
