Kitscoty replaces school zones to improve resident safety

To improve the safety of families in the community, the Village of Kitscoty has implemented new speed zone changes. On September 1, school zones were replaced with 30 kilometres per hour speed zones effective 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

After taking in concerns from residents, Council eliminated school zones on 49 Avenue, 51 Street, 50 and 51 Avenue. Chief Administrative Officer Sharon Williams says with school back in session, the zone changes reduce any risk with children in the area.

“We had received some concerns from residents, number one regarding the speed of traffic in some parts of the village.”

Due to reported speeding, the council decided to extend the zone change to 51 Street north to 53 Avenue, and 48 Street and 51 Street between 53 Avenue.

“We got two schools in that area, we got the arena, we’ve got a daycare, a play school in that area, so it’s just to slow the traffic down in general.”

New signage has been installed around the village along with electronic speed boards in various during September to remind drivers to slow down.

“I think the council sees it as a positive, overall for the general safety throughout the village on some of the main roads where there is a lot of pedestrian activity.”

New signage has been installed around the village along with electronic speed boards in various during September to remind drivers to slow down. The Village is reminding residents that the RCMP has been notified of the changes and will be enforcing the new speed limits.
