Local farmers progress with harvest despite cool, wet weather

Local producers were able to make progress with harvest despite cool, wet weather, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture. 34 per cent of crops is now in the bin for the northwest region, which includes Lloydminster. The region is behind the five year average of 60 per cent for this time 0f year.

Several areas received rainfall between three millimetres to 28 millimetres between the week of September 24th to 30th. North Battleford accumulated 14mm of precipitation while Turtleford only saw 4 mm.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as eight per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate and 14 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture conditions are rated as five per cent surplus, 70 per cent adequate and 25 per cent short.

The main cause of crop damage this week was due to hail, strong winds, snow and isolated flooding. There have been reports of downgrading due to excess moisture and sprouting in the field. Any grain that has been coming off has been tough and is being placed in aeration bins and dryers.

Provincially, producers were able to make some progress despite an early winter storm that hit the regions. 7 per cent of the crop is now combined, up from 39 per cent last week. The five-year average is 75 per cent combined for this time of year.
