Local MMA fighter preparing for professional debut

A homegrown Lloydminster fighter will soon be making his professional mixed martial arts debut.

Andrew Mavridis is undefeated on the amateur circuit with a record of eight wins and zero losses and is now moving into the professional MMA after accepting a fight in the Unified MMA organization.

“I feel pretty good and being a professional has always been the goal,” Mavridis says.

He’s been training for four years with different trainers and coaches with the aim of becoming a professional since he first found out about the sport. Mavridis is an instructor at the Lloydminster based Fight Farm which he says is home to him.

“Once I found Fight Farm I jumped right in and haven’t stopped since.”

Coach Garrett Tepper says he treats everyone at the Fight Farm like family and Mavridis shows an incredible work ethic and the drive to become a professional in the sport.

“Andrew is a representative of our family,” Tepper says. “For us, our goal is to get Andrew to the level where he set out to be. I have no doubt in my mind that he will hit that professional level.”

Tepper says Mavridis has been following the plan they laid out years ago and expects him to quickly reach his dreams.

“The work ethic is crazy. There’s nobody at that gym that puts in the effort or time and is a role model for the kids. He shows that if you want to get to that next level you can’t do it on a hope or prayer. You’ve got to work.”

Mavridis typically fights in the lightweight division however, Unified wasn’t able to find an opponent in this division so he agreed to move up a weight class to welterweight. He says he’s confident ahead of the fight and hopes to get to world championships someday.

“The size difference doesn’t really matter to me and we have guys at the gym that are going to get me ready. I’m not worried at all.”

Andrew Mavridis has signed a contract to fight Josh Mackenzie however, Unified has not confirmed the fight as of yet. If Mackenzie signs, the fight will take place on December 6 for Unified 39 at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch.
