Stubbs holds on to MP seat in landslide victory

Shannon Stubbs is projected to retain her MP seat in the Lakeland riding.

“I’m grateful and honoured that the people of Lakeland have put their trust and confidence in me a second time to go to Ottawa to fight for our values, fight for our priorities and fight for all the communities in our big riding.”

In the unofficial results, NDP candidate Jeffrey Swanson was a far second in the constituency with Liberal candidate Mark Watson in third. The People’s Party of Canada Alain Houle is in fourth followed by Green Party candidate Kira Brunner, Libertarian Party Robert McFazdean and Veterans Coalition candidate Roberta Marie Graham respectively.

Stubbs says she will continue to work as hard as she did in her first run in the House of Commons.

“I will be a tireless advocate of the issues and priorities that are important to the people and residents here,” she says. “I think our advocacy for pipelines, oil and gas jobs, farmers, agriculture issues and for tax cuts to put more money in the pockets of everyday Canadians will be more important now than ever.”

The federal Liberal Party is projected to hold a minority government which Stubbs says is not ideal. She says she only has experience working with a majority government.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty in a minority government and we may be back to an election sooner than we all want to be. It will depend on how strong the coalition on the left is but it will be interesting to see what unfolds.”

As of Monday night, the Conservative Party of Canada candidate sat at 23,407 votes with 145 of 238 polls reported once her unofficial win was announced.
