United Way funding free swimming lessons for youth in Lloydminster

Lloydminster & District United Way is providing free swimming lessons to youth in the city.

United Way is partnering with the Bioclean Aquatic Centre to provide lessons to about 350 children beginning January 2020.

Brian Hanterman, President of Lloydminster & District United Way, says the BAC will offer public Red Cross swimming lessons to children as young as four months until March 2020.

“To give every Lloydminster child the opportunity to learn how to swim will ensure they have fun safely in, and around, bodies of water, regardless if it’s a pool or lake. It’s important to keep these fun, potentially life-saving skills accessible to all children, regardless of economic circumstances.”

The lessons come from a $17,000 donation from the organization to the City of Lloydminster.

Director of Recreation and Cultural Services Joël Turcotte says there are several benefits for children to learn how to swim.

“Not only does it build muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness, but it also helps maintain a healthy weight, heart and lungs. We’re fortunate to have the Lloydminster and District United Way contribute to the many programs and services available to Lloydminster and area residents.”

To register for the free lessons, the city is opening an on-line registration starting November 21 at 9 a.m. The lessons are available to a maximum of two children per family.
