Polar Splash returns to Border City in early December

Border City Connects is looking for people brave enough to take a dip in the pool this winter.

The organization will be holding its third annual Polar Bear Splash on December 7. Proceeds from the fundraiser go towards the operational costs for Border City Connects which provides trips to the people of Lloydminster who have mobility issues.

This year, the event is stepping away from the celebrity splashes and is looking for members of the community to join in on the event. Director Glenn Fagnan says he’s hoping for a mild day and more people will get involved with their new incentive.

People who raise $500 will be entered into a draw to win $10,000.

“For non-profits right now it’s a little difficult. There’s a lot of people chasing the same dollars and we’re hoping with this initiative it’ll draw a number of different people throughout the community which will help us out with our operations.”

Other prizes include a dinner for eight at an undisclosed location for the person who raises the most amount of money. People can also win a dinner for four for having the best costume.

Fagnan says they recently bought a new van to help transport residents around the city. The organization has received several grants but is still in need of $20,000 to $25,000 to pay off the purchase. He says they were able to raise roughly that amount with the splash last year.

Cold weather forced the event to change days last year but Fagnan says they want to hold the splash in conjunction with “Here Comes Santa Claus.” The splash will take place at the parking lot on 50 Avenue and 49 Street. Fagnan hopes to get 100 people to take part in the event.

People interested in participating can contact [email protected] or through their website.
