Oil production and agriculture a future focus for Sask. government

The Saskatchewan government has released its new plan for provincial growth in the next ten years. Premier Scott Moe presented his blueprint which includes 30 goals they’re trying to hit for 2030 which includes creating more jobs in the province and growing the population.

The plan targets to have 1.4 million people, 100,000 new jobs and increasing exports by 50 per cent.

“Our government has always maintained that growth itself is not the goal; rather, growth will afford the ability to invest in a better quality of life for Saskatchewan families and communities.  That is the purpose of growth,” says Premier Scott Moe.

Part of the plan looks to increase oil production to 600,000 barrels a day and increase potash sales to $9 billion. The province is looking to reinstate Provincial Sales Tax exemptions for exploratory and downhole drilling to help increase mining exploration and the value of mining exports.

They also look to grow agri-food exports to $20 billion, increase agriculture revenue to $10 billion and triple the growth of its technology sector. The provincial government will be introducing two new growth tax incentives one for agricultural technology. The first incentive supports emerging digital technology which will attract agricultural technology companies to Saskatchewan. The second will encourage investments into the chemical fertilizer sector.

The province will also set up three new international trade and investment offices in Japan, India and Singapore to increase exports, attract investments and strengthen trade relationships.

The Growth Plan shows the government will be investing $30 billion in infrastructure over ten years including building and upgrading 10,000 kilometres of highway. It also touches on reducing carbon emissions, growing Indigenous participation in the economy and increasing immigration to the province.

“Our province is blessed with the abundant natural resources, innovative industries and hard-working people necessary to continue our growth to 2030 and beyond. Through this plan, we will build a stronger Saskatchewan that is home to a strong economy, strong communities and strong families.”

The full plan can be found on the province’s website.
