City looking to take over day-to-day operations of Lloydminster archives

The Lloydminster Regional Archives could soon be brought in-house to the city.

The Lloydminster Regional Archives aims at restoring and archiving historic pieces from the Lloydminster area. The archives are currently run by the non-profit group, Lloydminster and District Centennial Commemorative Association.

The LCCA has approached the city wanting to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding where the city would take over the day-to-day operations of the archives.

Two part-time workers would then become city employees and grant funding given to the operation by the city would be folded back into the city’s capital funds. Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the situation will help clear up some of the bookkeeping as the day-to-day operations are already funded by the city through non-profit grants.

“They were already in a city facility. They had a lease arrangement which would disappear because it’s part of the city.”

Councillor Glenn Fagnan points out many Prairie cities have already brought in their archives under their own operations and praises the work done by the archives.

“The archives have done a wonderful job on the way they’ve put the whole system together. It’s all up to standards provincially and nationally. We are getting a great piece of work for the city.”

The LCCA would continue as a separate non-profit organization and act as a fundraising arm for archival projects.

“From the city’s perspective, they’ll be paying their own way so there are no extra costs to the taxpayers.”

Aalbers says by having the organization separate from the city, the organization can continue applying for funding and work on special projects such as archiving old news footage and talking to long-time Lloydminster residents and having their stories on record.

“They can access monies that the city may not if it was through the city. As a non-profit organization, they are able to access monies and use for purposes outside of the day-to-day operations.”

Fagnan says the LCCA would act in the same way as the Richard Larsen Barr Colony Foundation.

City council will make a decision on the MOU at a future council meeting.
