RCMP reminds residents to drive safe during the holidays

With the holiday season means lots of driving for some families, Lloydminster RCMP is reminding drivers of safe travel tips.

Constable Micheal Hagel says the main focus for mounties during the holiday is impaired driving with two more check-stops possibly taking place before the new year.

Hagel says community members frequenting Christmas parties who don’t believe they’re fit to drive, shouldn’t be driving.

“Lloydminster has lots of taxi cabs, there is a lot of options. If you’re hosting a party, make sure you take people’s keys away from them. Don’t be afraid to take someone’s keys away if they’re trying to drive and you know they’re too intoxicated.”

During the next couple of weeks, the highways will be jampacked full of families driving to their holiday destinations. Hagel reminds residents to be mindful while travelling during the winter.

“Take your time. The roads can get icy, they can get snow-covered, visibility can be very low, make sure you give yourself tons of time to get to your destination.”

Those preparing for long-distance trips are reminded to let your destination know their estimated time of arrival and have a winter survival kit in your vehicle. The kit usually consists of blankets, food, and water in the case of an emergency.

During the holidays, many homes may be left unattended. Hagel asks residents to make sure their home is well lit and inform your neighbours that you will be away for the holidays.
