Lloydminster RCMP aims for more community engagement

The Lloydminster RCMP is starting off 2020 by reaching out to the community for feedback. Mounties will be hosting two town hall sessions on January 15th at the Legacy Centre.

As the RCMP is a big part of the community, Inspector Lee Brachmann says it’s important for the detachment to interact with residents.

“We will give an overview of some of the crime trends that have been occurring over the last year. We will solicit some feedback from people who’re attending as to what they are seeing and what they’re hearing in their communities and where they feel the need is and what the trends are they’re seeing as well.”

Brachmann says it has been a couple of years since the detachment has held a town hall session. The engagement meeting will take place at noon and 7 p.m. next year. Brachmann says a key component in the RCMP’s planning comes from community opinions.

“We can take that and incorporate that into our strategic planning for the next fiscal year.”

Over the last year, the Lloydminster RCMP has implemented a number of crime reduction initiatives including a strategy that is interwoven into all of the operations of the detachment.

As mentioned in City Hall last month, the RCMP’s new crime reduction strategy is having a positive outcome in the community. The plan focuses on property crime in Lloydminster based on research and information on repeat offenders, prolific addresses and crime hot spots.

As there is no end date for the program, Brachmann says the detachment will carry on their strategy moving into the new year making adjustments when needed. He says community partnerships, especially in health and human resources, will be another focus in 2020.

“[We] will continue to work with our partner organizations to deal with the more underlying issues pertaining to criminality. Essentially, taking an enforcement strategy isn’t be all and end all, I think there needs to be a wrap-around component with that.”

Overall, property crime has seen a small reduction since the strategy was implemented. Brachmann says the department plans on capitalizing on the decrease moving forward while decreasing other crimes in Lloydminster.
