The RM of Britannia, St. Walburg and Marshall will be getting some money back from photo radar tickets collected by the province.
The Saskatchewan government announced the recipients for their traffic safety fund grants. The RM of Britannia received $9,500 for a mobile speed trailer, Marshall received $5,400 for a portable speed display sign, and St. Walburg received $26,250 for school zone crosswalk signage and enhancements.
“A lot of these small communities don’t have the tax base to do some of these things and they feel that these things are necessary for their communities. The way this money is going out, the way these safety initiatives are happening, it saves lives, accidents and injuries,” says Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave.
Forty-eight communities in total are benefitting from the latest round traffic safety fund grants with a total of $500,000 spread across the communities. The funding comes from the photo speed enforcement tickets and Hargrave says the enforcement is showing good results.
“We have, I think, 9 photo radars in the province. It has slowed traffic down and we know it works where they’ve been installed. Circle Drive in Saskatoon and Ring Road in Regina, traffic accidents are down and traffic has slowed down so we’re pleased with that.”
A total of 75 communities have received funding through the grant since it was put in place last year. Funding is granted twice a year to communities asking for intersection and crosswalk improvements, speed display signs, pedestrian crossing signals or other speed-reduction initiatives.
The application deadline for the next round of grants is March 30.
