Hearts of Lloydminster displays care within the community

People going past houses in Lloydminster may notice something growing within the community.

Hearts have been popping up on windows, doors and fences throughout the Border City and they are all connected to a social media initiative.

Hearts of Lloydminster is a community-wide scavenger hunt which encourages people to display a heart on their homes. Group Administrator Harpreet Christie says it’s an activity for both children and adults.

“When you go for a walk, kids get attracted to it and it’s like a scavenger hunt and find all the hearts. It’s just to bring the community together and show them we care and want them to be safe.”

Christie mentions her daughter is now paying special attention to the homes when they are out for a walk around the neighborhood.

“She’s specifically looking at windows looking for hearts and everyday there seems to be a new one popping up in my neighbourhood.”

Christie started the group after seeing the hearts on a neighbor’s window. She eventually tracked down the origin of the hearts to a social media challenge started by local resident Cheryl Ross.

“It’s making Lloydminster colourful and putting a smile on peoples faces.”

The hearts have since spread to communities such as Lashburn and North Battleford. Christie mentions she spread the word about the hearts to her friends who live in rural communities.

“I think it’s a great movement that should become international eventually and everybody should be placing hearts in their windows to show that we all care.”

She invites residents of Lloydminster to add a heart to their home, take a picture and share it using #heartsoflloydminster on Facebook.

“Be safe, be kind and we will get through this.”
