Lloydminster Rescue Squad tenancy extended

The Lloydminster Rescue Squad’s tenancy in their building has been extended.

The squad is currently lease a building in the 5000 block of 48A Avenue, which is set to expire at the end of the year. At November’s City council meeting the agreement was extended until the end of June 2016.

Director of Community Services Don Stang explains why the squad needs a new building.

“This has been going on since 2014,” Stang said. “The building has been identified as needing significant capital investment. We’ve look at ‘do we invest into that building or do we look for alternative locations for the rescue squad or our other tenant there, the [Lloydminster] Handivan Society ?’ I think it’s in everybody’s best interests to find a more feasible, economic location for both those organizations, and then figure out what we do with that building from there forward.”

The city says the estimated repair costs to the building would total more than $500,000.

In 2014, the Lloydminster Fire Department became responsible for all rescue calls in city limits, but the rescue squad continues to serve surrounding communities.
