Saskatchewan discusses election changes around COVID-19

The 2020 Saskatchewan Provincial Election is set to go ahead on but may look a bit different as it works around COVID-19.

On May 13th, the Government approved changes to The Election Act Regulations, which now allows the Chief Electoral Officer to decide how the election is delivered to voters.

Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young says that no changes have been made yet but any possible changes will be in how people can vote, not when.

“It does not provide the power to change the date of the election, or abort an election once the legislature is irrevocably dissolved, and the writ of the election has been issued.”

The goal of changing Election Act definitions of emergencies to include health emergencies, the province says, is to maintain health guidelines and ensure physical distancing for both staff and voters, while allowing the election to be done fairly.

Young says that there will be many different facets to look at in order to make the decision on what the election will look like.

“We don’t have in the province, first and foremost, a completely electronic system for electronic voting. [The Chief Electoral Officer] is going to have to work through what polling stations are going to look like, this gives him the authority to possibility expand advanced polling days to more days for people to be able to vote.”

The Saskatchewan General Provincial Election is slated for October 26th.
