Another week of strong field seeding progress in the region : Sask. Crop report

Ongoing nice weather is giving Lloydminster farmers a continued leg-up on fieldwork.

The Northwest Region, which includes the Lloydminster area, is now at 75 per cent of fields seeded, up from 38 per cent last week. Across the province, field seeding progress is now at 80 per cent, up from the five year average of 78 per cent this time of year. Crops have also begun to emerge in several parts of Saskatchewan as of May 27th.

The province says there while rainfall did delay some farmers in the Northwest, it was welcome to help support crop and pasture growth and reduce topsoil dryness due to windy conditions.

Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture are rated as three per cent surplus, 71 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short and three per cent very short. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, 17 per cent short and two per cent very short.

Farmers have been busy seeding, moving livestock to pasture, calving and spraying pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide sprays.
