SPCA seeing adoption numbers pick up again

The Lloydminster and District SPCA is seeing adoptions begin to pick up again, as COVID-19 numbers drop and people become more comfortable leaving the house.

Operations Manager Zoe Gray says their adoption waitlist is still quite long for surrendered animals, but their numbers for stray animals needing to find a forever home is getting lower as those animals are first priority for adoption. The SPCA says they have  100 animals in their care right now, which is very near capacity for the shelter. Gray explains that this could continue to increase as the summer sees more animals in the shelter and vet clinics re-open, helping make more animals healthy and ready for the shelter.

“Typically right now is kitten season. We have seen an influx of kittens come into the shelter,  not nearly as bad as previous years, but it’s probably still on the light side.”

The SPCA has begun returning to some normal adoption operations, including allowing adoption partners like PetSmart and PetValu to be adoption points for their kittens. They also recently held a Canada Day Adoption Event, which helped them find some pets new homes. The shelter itself remains open by appointment only. People wanting a pet should email or call in advance so that they can set up an appointment.

From there, The SPCA will go through the needs of the animal, and people can ask questions to make sure pets are right for them. One thing the shelter has been watching for is people who may want to adopt while they’re at home during the pandemic, but may not be able to care for the animal after they go back to normal routines.

“We are directing people to look at our foster program,” Gray says “So they can take home a litter of kittens, or take on a puppy if we have some of those animals in the shelter needing those homes.”

The foster program provides a temporary home that gets the pet ready for permanent adoption. More details on that, and all information on the process of adopting a pet, as well as caring for the animal, can be found on the Lloydminster and District SPCA website.
