More flu shots will be available in Saskatchewan this year, as the province plans for an increase in demand this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ministry of Health has ordered just over 36 per cent more vaccine compared to last year. Flu shots are especially recommended for higher-risk people like seniors, children under 5, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions. The Ministry adds that seniors with chronic health conditions in the heart, lungs or those with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to complications from influenza.
Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab says that it is particularly important to get the flu shot during the pandemic, so as to cut down person to person spread of influenza.
The seasonal influenza immunization program has also been updated to provide no-cost high dose vaccines for people living in long term care homes, who are also 65 or older. Long term care residents in that same age bracket will also get this high dose vaccine will also receive it for free again this year.Â
The province also plans to announce modifications to when and where flu shots will be available this year, as well as enhanced physical distancing and sanitation due to COVID-19.
