Young Lloydminster triathlon athletes donate to local non-profits

Several young Lloydminster athletes are giving back to the community despite not being able to run in an annual charity event.

The 7th Annual ATB Kids of Steel Triathlon was to be held at Bud Miller Park this past June, but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Those who registered for the event had the option either refund their fees or donate them to local charities. About 75 per cent of fees were donated for a total of $6,240.

Lynden Bender was one of the athletes planning to tackle the triathlon this year. He says “it’s a bit of a bummer” not being able to participate this year, but the donation will now go towards helping more children take part in similar events in the future.

“I’m proud to say that we get to give that to other people and give the chance and joy that I have to other people.”

Bender has run in every ATB Kids of Steel Triathlon held in Lloydminster as well as some in Vermilion and Ontario.

“I really love the energy and activity with everyone on a nice day. It’s always a nice day. I want other people to have energy and joy like that too.”

Both KidSport Lloydminster and the Olive Tree received $3,120 from the donation.

“It’s great to receive a donation of this kind being that we’re a sports organization and seeing the Lloydminster triathlon supports youth in sports,” Alison Fulkerth with KidSport says. “Any funds we receive go directly to youth in our community. All the funds stay local and go directly to registration costs.”

Olive Tree Assistant Director Jana Thompson says the donation will go directly to supporting the food bank.

“It’s amazing to see the community come together in uncertain times and to donate and think of us is really exciting.”
