Onion Lake Cree Nation declares COVID-19 lockdown after case found in area

The Onion Lake Cree Nation will be closing their border, except for necessary travel, after confirming a case of COVID-19 in the area.

OLCN Health confirmed the information in an online release October 16th, and is currently working to contact trace and notify people who may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus. All people who are contacted by either the Onion Lake Health Clinic or Sask Public Health will be told to self-isolate for 14 days, and if they devolp COVID-19 symptoms, they’re advised to call Healthlink 8-1-1 or the Onion Lake COVID Line for next steps.

In the meantime, the Cree Nation says they will be closing the border from October 16th to October 25th. Checkpoints will be put up to record people coming and going, and only people who live in OLCN or work to provide essential services will be allowed in. Departments and offices will be closed, but residents needing to pick up cheques can call ahead and it will be brought to their vehicle.

If someone needs to leave OLCN for necessary reasons, they will be limited to two people per vehicle, with the exception of bringing someone to help an elder. In this case, three will be allowed. A curfew will also be in place between 10 PM and 6 PM, and the OLCN says RCMP will be in the area to assist after curfew and make sure unnecessary traffic isn’t on the road. The highschool will also be closed and sanitizing will begin.

Onion Lake also says that residents should continue following public health guidelines like handwashing, sanitization, physical distancing, keeping gatherings smaller than 15 and in an established social bubble. They’re reminding people that self-isolating is mandatory for people who have been diagnosed as positive for COVID-19, or been in close contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19.

People in Onion Lake wanting to get COVID-19 tested are told they can drive through the Blue Medical Test Center as well, which they say has been built to accommodate an increase in positive cases.
