COVID-19 outbreak declared at E.S. Laird Middle School

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has declared an outbreak at E.S. Laird Middle School as three positive cases of COVID-19 have been found in individuals at the school.

In a release, Lloydminster Public School Division says they were notified of a second, third and fourth positive cases at the school. The first case was announced on October 22nd.

“The virus spreads from person to person by large, respiratory droplets, like from a cough or a sneeze. This means that a person would need to have direct contact with droplets from a sick person or surfaces that they have recently touched. The risk to the general population in the school becoming infected because of these cases is low,” says Medical Health Officer Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu.

To protect privacy, the LPSD says no more details about these specific cases will be released.

LPSD is informing the school community and specific classrooms as SHA conducts further contact tracing. In accordance with advice from the Local Medical Health Officer, students in classroom 9E will continue remote learning and will return to class on November 6th.

Anyone who develops symptoms of COVID-19 is reminded to self-isolate, call HealthLine 8-1-1 to arrange testing as soon as possible.

The SHA declares outbreaks when two or more people test positive for COVID-19 in a non-household setting. It is not necessarily an indicator of risk to the public, says the SHA.
