Local nurses score big with World Juniors 50/50

Eight Lloydminster nurses have won big as part of the World Juniors Hockey online 50/50.

The frontline workers went in on tickets together as they are avid supporters of local hockey, with many of their children playing in the minors. During the December 27th game day, it was announced that one of them, Shari Mack, had scored the winning ticket. In total, the eight maternity ward nurses will split a jackpot of $241,850.

In a video posted to Hockey Canada’s website on December 30th, the team of nurses expressed their joy at winning, saying they found out while they were on shift at the hospital. They also expressed that the win was a bright spot during a challenging year for the entire health care field due to COVID-19, and they were “extremely blessed” to have won.

This year marks the first where the World Juniors 50/50 was put online, in response to teams having to play in an isolated bubble without fans. Each draw will be held on game day, with the next two being on December 31st and January 2nd. Ticket sales open at 9 AM and close at 10 PM each day.

The other half of the money raised, the IIHF says, will be reinvested into grassroots hockey programs to help improve the quality of life of Albertans through hockey.
