SGI reports second-lowest car accident fatality year in six decades

SGI says that 2020 was the second-lowest year for behind the wheel fatalities in the province recorded in the last six decades.

The insurance company says there were 87 fatalities on Saskatchewan roads in 2020, which is lower than the ten-year average and second-lowest recorded in the last 60+ years. 2019 was the lowest overall, with 71. The ten-year average is just over 131.

While SGI says the province and its drivers has made strides to lower the fatal or injury collision rate, every death is a family member or loved one left to mourn, and they’ll continue striving for zero.

Minister Responsible for SGI Don Morgan says he applauds everyone who is committed to driving safely and thanked law enforcement for their work in both keeping people educated on the road, and working on keeping people safe in real time out on the streets and highways.

SGI is also reminding drivers they can help lower the fatality rate by taking simple safety steps: These include putting the phone away, driving sober, following the speed limit, putting on a seatbelt and following all the rules of the road.

They add that these numbers are just one snapshot about road safety, and a serious one, but more will be known when they finalize numbers on injury and overall collision data.

They say this will give people a clearer picture of what’s going on out on the road.
