Hockey Alberta cancels tiered AAA and AA hockey games for rest of season

Hockey Alberta, along with the leagues making it up, has cancelled all tiered AAA and AA league regular play for the rest of the 2020-21 season.

The organization says that the Alberta Government’s recent announcement of a four-step timeline for reopenings, based on hospitalization numbers, would only allow for the earliest hockey return to be March 1.

They say while they are disappointed by the decision, as they have been working with the province on a safe and inclusive relaunch plan, they say they will continue to work on a plan that allows for hockey, keeping young people active, in support of their physical and mental well-being.

The decision affects several leagues, which include the:

  • North East Alberta Hockey League (NEAHL)
  • Northern Alberta Interlock (NAI)
  • All Peace Hockey League (APHL)
  • Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League (RMFHL)
  • East Central Alberta Female Hockey League (ECAFHL)
  • South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL)
  • Northern Alberta Hockey League (NAHL)
  • Hockey Calgary
  • Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL)
  • Rural & Edmonton Minor Hockey League (REMHL)
  • Rockies Hockey League (RHL)
  • Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL)
  • Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL)

Hockey Alberta adds that Junior B, C, and Female and Senior leagues are looking at February 8th as the day they will determine whether they’ll be able to return to play this year.

They add that members are exploring ways spring development season when Step 2 of the Government of Alberta’s plan comes into effect, ensuring those who want to play will have the place and means to do so.
