City lays out plans for summer construction projects, awards two contracts

The City has laid out some plans for the summer’s construction season, including where is to be worked on and who will do it.

At the April 12th council meeting, the city announced they will be giving a contract to ASL Paving to work on several areas of repair in the city. In total, the City will pay 1.2 million dollars, with a 15 per cent contingency of $191,000 if needed for delays or other costs on the project.

The work will be done on the Mid-Block Lane South of 43 Street between 57 Avenue and 59 Avenue, 49 Avenue from 38 Street to 42 Street, 57A Avenue from 27 Street to 29 Street, 18 Street and 52 Avenue Intersection and 50 Avenue West Side Service Road from 57 Street to 60 Street.

ASL will also be doing some sidewalk work on 52 Avenue from 57 Street North to the Mid-Block Lane.

The project is set to come in under budget, which Mayor Gerald Aalbers says is always a bonus to the community both in up front costs and down the line should a project need a funding boost or extra cash be needed for the city’s reserves .

“The economy has gone down over the last couple of years more than we would like, so that results in potential areas where having some money in reserves, [so] that we can continue to deliver what we deliver on a regular basis, will come in handy.”

The City also awarded a bid to a La Crete, Alberta based construction to do some repairs on 44 Street. In total, Knelsen Sand & Gravel Ltd will be getting just over $5.8 million for their work, with a five per cent contingency of $295,000.

Some of those projects being undertaken are construction of a new southbound right turn lane, as well as rebuilding the concrete infrastructure and underground upgrades at 44th and 62 Avenue.

Then, from 62 to 75 Avenue following the highway, crews will be deep patching the roadway between 66 and 75 Ave, concrete curb, gutter replacement and building up the existing median between 62 Avenue and 75 Avenue, construction of a new eastbound right turn lane at 66 Avenue, and complete reconstruction of the roadway between 62 Avenue and 66 Avenue.

With a lot of work to do in the coming months, Aalbers is calling on residents to be patient as construction rolls out.

“People will remember in Lloydminster, there are two seasons. There is the construction season and there is the winter season. And we have got through the winter season, touch wood. Now we will deal with 44 street and the construction season. So it will be a little bit challenging for pedestrians and certainly motorists, but we will ask for their cooperation as we move through this.”

Both projects are targeted to begin in May, with ASL’s portion of the work expected to be completed by September 15, 2021. For the 44 Street Knelsen project, that has an anticipated wrap date of no later than October 31st, 2021.
