Residents should expect test emergency alert Wednesday: SPSA

With this week being National Emergency Preparedness Week, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is reminding residents to be prepared, while they also testing some of their emergency measures.

The SPSA will be testing their Alert Ready system on May 5th, around 1:55 PM, with a warning test coming to people cell phones or devices. They add though that not all mobile devices will receive the alert if they aren’t compatible for it or the device’s software isn’t up to date.

If people are concerned they aren’t getting an emergency alert, they can visit the SaskAlert website or call their service provider.

SPSA President Marlo Pritchard says these periodic tests are important so that in the case of a real disaster or emergency, the system is ready to roll out as quickly and effectively as possible.

People are also reminding to be aware of risks in their area, have a plan in case of an emergency and work on creating or obtaining an emergency preparedness kit.

These kits should contain things like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries and blankets, among others. Personal care items, changes of clothing and items for pets are all also recommended. A full list of items for an emergency kit can be found on the Government of Saskatchewan website.

Pritchard adds that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and now is a good time for people to check they have the items and the know-how in a situation they may need to use it.
