Bike for Breakfast is pedaling for school kids nutrition

Local organizers of Bike for Breakfast YLL are turning the wheels to tackle the nutritional needs of school kids.

It’s 1,046 kilometres from the Border City to Tuffnell, SK and back. That’s what their eleven riders will be cycling as they look to Lloydminster generosity to chip in with the funding which will go towards programs for kids to have a healthy start to the day.

With two weeks to go to the June 4th cross-province cycle, Tracy Matthews and Lloydminster Bobcats coach Nigel Dube are on the team aiming to hit 200 thousand dollars for the kids. It’s a 48 hour non-stop pedal that they are presently in training for.

Team member Tracy Matthews is emphasizing that the funds will benefit kids in the community.

“Every single penny that we are raising is going to the schools, to the kids. There is no cost incurred. We are not using any of the money for anything. We are all putting ourselves out there. The ride itself is 48-plus hours. No stopping, no hotels. We are feeding ourselves. Just to know that you are giving to a good cause.”

The team includes local dentist Dr Nekky Jamal, Podcaster Shaun Newman, Ken Rutherford from Lakeland College, Natalie Weibe, Becky Grassl, Patricia Brokoff, Tricia Hunter and others.

They are putting their limbs to the test to pitch in funding for school feeding programs across the region including those at Lloydminster Public School Division, Lloydminster Catholic School Division, Onion Lake Cree Nation, Northwest School Division and Buffalo Trail Elementary Schools.

Lloydminster Bobcats Coach and GM Nigel Dube is looking forward to more people coming to the plate.

“It speaks to the community of Lloydminster and it’s a giving community and it’s for the kids. So many great people are already involved and [have] donated. We look forward to more stepping up. Again, it speaks to taking care of the youths here.”

Bike for Breakfast YLL will be hosting a few preliminary fundraisers including Patio, Pizza and Pints at 4th Meridian Brewing Company in Lloydminster tonight Thursday, May 13, from 4 until 10 PM.

Local artist Brandi Hofer has pitched in with her artwork and outdoor spin classes are among other fundraisers that will be popping up.
