Alberta’s wildfire season is just around the corner

Wildfire season for Alberta officially starts in 2 weeks.

Protective measures will be in place early to prepare for the season, namely the annual restrictions on burning activities. As of March 1st, a permit will be required for all planned fires in the province’s Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires.

Accelerating wildfire season preparations was actually one of the recommendations of the Flat Top Wildfire Complex Review that followed the 2011 Slave Lake area wildfires.

As well, training starts for wildfire crew members at the beginning of March to coincide with the initiation of restrictions in the province, to take place at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s training centre in Hinton.

Last year’s wildfire season produced almost 2000 wildfires, which burned more than 492,000 hectares: more than double the 25-year average.

Fire permits are free and can be requested at any Agriculture and Forestry office. You can also download the Alberta wildfires mobile app for Android and iPhone.

To report a wildfire call 310-FIRE (3473). Only one-third of wildfires in the province are reported.
