National Drowning Prevention Week wraps with water smart reminder

Over 400 people drown annually in Canada, making it the second leading cause of unintentional death for children and the third leading cause of unintentional death for adults.

The Midwest Region is surrounded by numerous lakes which are frequented, especially during the Summer months. Local rescue teams have noted the increased volume of calls and demand for their services.

As the weekend approaches, the Lifesaving Society reminds people to be safe on and in the water as they make their plans.

National Drowning Prevention Week is being observed July 18 – 24, and the Society is bringing greater awareness to the issue of drowning deaths in Canada.

They are encouraging all Canadians to learn to swim by enrolling in a class at their local pool or lake.

Other measures include:

  1. Wear a properly fitted lifejacket when out on a boat
  2. Stay sober while participating in aquatic activities or supervising others in aquatic activities
  3. Ensure that children are under the direct supervision of an adult when around water
  4. Stay within arm’s reach of preschoolers when around water
  5. Take a water rescue course such as Bronze Medallion to learn how to safely rescue someone from a drowning situation. Well-intended untrained rescuers often become a victim as well.
