Busy September long prompts road safety advice

If the hot weather forecast by Environment Canada is any indicator of what is on tap for September long, then highways are sure to be busy when factoring numerous events across the prairies, including a trip to the lake.

The 57th Labour Day Classic at Mosaic featuring the Roughriders and the Blue Bombers is a sold out affair on Sunday, according the Roughriders website. Likewise the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks will also see action on the gridiron on Monday.

Highway staff are reminding motorists to plan ahead, slow down, and obey reduced speed limits in work zones.

In Saskatchewan, motorists can track road conditions and construction using the highway hotline and the weekly highway update.

In Alberta, motorists can view similar information using 511 Alberta. Alberta is also marking the first official Alberta Day on Sep. 1, with observances planned in several municipalities over the weekend.

In Lloydminster, the city is having a fireworks display on Saturday from 9 p.m. at Bud Miller Park to join the Alberta celebrations.

Officials in both provinces are encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors and be safe over the Labour Day holiday.
