SHA encouraging people to get the flu shot

Saskatchewan Health Authority officials are expressing concerns about the flu, COVID-19, RSV, as well as Rhinovirus and want people to take steps to protect their health.

Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu Medical Health Officer with responsibility for the north west region that includes Lloydminster, the Battlefords and area is recommending that people get the flu shot.

“I encourage everybody at this time to take the vaccines – against the influenza, and COVID-19 as long as people are eligible for those vaccines.”

Nsungu says they are seeing some increases in influenza cases.

“Two-weeks ago influenza was increasing quite a lot. It is true that in the last week it decreased a little bit compared to the previous week, but we don’t know if this decrease will continue to be sustained or if it’s just an isolated change from one week to another.”

Other precautions being recommended include cough etiquette, masking (which is a personal choice), staying at home when you have symptoms so as not to spread the illness and seeking medical help if the symptoms become severe, adds Nsungu.

The health official sees these measures as helping to preserve the health system and safeguard against pressures at hospitals.
