Polar dip, banquet to celebrate 50 years of Macklin Kinettes

About 35 people will brave the cold waters of Macklin Lake on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Macklin Kinette Club raises funds for Cystic Fibrosis with a polar dip challenge.

The volunteer service group is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the fundraiser and as well a banquet in the evening at the Macklin Credit Union Legacy Centre.

Organizers are encouraging spectators at the polar dip and will be serving hot-dogs.

Wendy Weinkauf who has been a Kinette for some 20-years and a club member since 2010 says it’s a great achievement to have reached five-decades of service to the community.

“It is fairly significant in that people’s time is of great value and to be able to have volunteers that are still able to put their time into their community and have the community benefit from volunteer organizations both locally and provincially for events such as Tele-Miracle.”

The 1972-club will host members from the original charter at the anniversary banquet.

Weinkauf sees the 50th anniversary celebration as a tribute to the spirit of volunteerism.

“I think it’s a great achievement and just a positive aspect in our community that shows that it is worthwhile to help others – and what a difference volunteerism can make in a small community.”

The anniversary banquet starts at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails, supper at 6 p.m. with a program to follow and live music from the Darryl Anderson band.

Several area clubs including Provost, Maidstone and Melville are pitching in for the polar dip and 50th anniversary celebration.

The Kin-Kinette clubs since 1964 have raised over $50 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
