Organ and tissue donation awareness week in Lloydminster

This week is Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, across the country, and here in Lloydminster.

The Mayor made the proclamation on Monday, April 18th, and the green ribbon flag was raised at City Hall. Local group leader for the Canadian Transplant Association, Donna Krilow-Lorenz says getting people talking about the topic is really all the group wants to see come out of this campaign.

“To bring thinking about organ and tissue donation to the forefront and just getting people talking. And if we do that, I think we’ve done our job. And if eventually people in our community that are on the wait list, ultimately receive their transplants and have a second chance at life, then that’s what I would call success,” says Lorenz.

There is also banner hanging downtown on 50th Avenue this week to remind passers-by of the need for organ donors.

The group will be set up this week with an information booth at Wilson Registries Thursday, April 21st from 10 am – 2pm.

“People that come in to do their driver’s licenses can do the online registry there with the motor vehicle staff, and we’ll just support that with some extra brochures and information,” explains Lorenz.

Individuals and businesses seeking to show their support for organ and tissue donation are encouraged to put up a green light bulb in their home or business for the week.
