Activities for Sexual Violence Awareness Month in May

Hashtag SVAM or #SVAM will be more prominent in May as Sexual Violence Awareness Month is being observed.

The Lloydminster Sexual Assault Services team will have numerous activities spread out during May with a pancake breakfast listed on the calendar for May 29.

Heather Sinfield, community initiatives director says they have several partnerships on the go including a Sobeys cupcake promotion.

Sobeys is donating one dollar from every batch of cupcakes that is sold towards LSAS. We encourage everybody to go eat some cupcakes and share them with their family, friends and colleagues.”

LSAS continues to fundraise to repair the foundation of its 100-year-old building with its Foundation 500 Initiative. They are hoping to start renos in July.

Sinfield adds they will be sharing information on their social media pages on various issues like victim blaming as they seek to bring more understanding on the impacts of victim blaming and promote healing.

Other activities include a Teaching Boundaries and Consent Workshop on May 25.

“This is a free workshop for parents and caregivers who are interested in understanding how to talk to their children and teens – anywhere from 18-months to 18-years, about their bodies, sex, consent, dating, intimacy and boundaries. It’s a very fun day filled with a bunch of learning,” says Sinfield.

Another strategy will support clients on the waitlist ahead of their appointments.

“So, another way that we support those on the waitlist is through a virtual skills group. Where we teach them about feelings, emotions, coping strategies and safety planning,” says Sinfield.

LSAS is also getting a Snapchat filter during the month to use in promoting its programs and services.
