St. Mary’s teacher surprised with provincial award

What better way to start a new week than to surprise a teacher with an excellence award. Kayla Wakelin at St. Mary’s Elementary is getting the 2024 Excellence in Catholic Education Award. The award comes from the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Association.

Lloydminster Catholic School Division, or LCSD staff were on hand at the school to deliver the glad tidings to Kayla who is described as a committed educator, and liturgical leader, who imparts music and singing to all the grades, makes time for hockey and is often the last person to leave school as she makes sure all the kids are on the bus.

Wakelin says she was told to “look nice” on Monday, but did not know why. She was completely surprised, and with emotion accepted the honour.

“I feel blessed. I get to do this every day and share God’s love with the kids and help them realize how important they are,” says Wakelin.

Kayla’s efforts were crucial also in getting the prayer garden established when Holy Rosary High School completed its recent expansion.

“Miss Wakelin is just a great teacher in our Kindergarten here at St. Mary’s. She leads our choir. She is such a faith-filled person,” Paula Scott, chair of LCSD.

The board says Kayla embodies an exceptional commitment to her role as an educator. Her involvement in the school division choir supports the spiritual atmosphere at church services.

Kayla is skilled at the ukulele and singing. She is presently pursuing her master’s in theology.
