Lloyd Comp thespians bring back provincial banner, four special awards from Alberta drama festival

Lloydminster Comprehensive drama students are back from Red Deer with provincial glory.

The Dram-Addicts who staged their one-act plays on Friday night at the Vic Juba Community Theatre brought back a provincial banner and four singular citations from the Alberta High School Drama Festival which wrapped with its awards gala on Saturday, May 11.

The festival which ran May 9-11 features one-act plays from across Alberta. Students punched their ticket after winning seven awards at the zone contest in Ardrossan in April.

The provincial results:

  • Emry Marchand – Outstanding New Work and Outstanding Production Design
  • Izac Vergian – Proficient Technician Golden Wrench Award
  • Ethan Dyer and Kady Voss – Outstanding Fight Choreography

Drama teacher Simon Stang said, “Proud doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling I get watching these students do what they love. Facing adversity since day one, Izac Verigan and Emry Marchand, along with their cast and crew, saw this through to the very end, and some recognition at the provincial level is just a cherry on top. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

winner, Yes Dear, which painted a sobering perspective on domestic violence. Set in the 1950s, the play serves up the ideal nuclear family on the platter of one step away from meltdown. It was adjudged the best in Ardrossan earning the right to go to provincials.

The second play, Elephant’s Graveyard, which snatched up awards at the Ardrossan regionals is set in 1916 and covers the only known public lynching of an elephant in a little circus town in Tennessee.
