222’s Fastpitch 18U hits the jackpot in Vegas

The 222’s Fastpitch 18U and 16U winter travel teams were off to Las Vegas this past weekend, Jan. 29 – Feb. 3, 2025 to compete in the Valentine’s Day Blast tournament.

Lloydminster is represented on the Saskatchewan-based 18U softball team by Pitcher Katherine Thiessen, Outfielder Halle Ducherer and Assistant Coach Donnie Atkinson.

The 18U team competed in 9 games over the 4 days.

In the semi-finals, the 222’s got to battle it out. With the 16U keeping the 18U on their toes as they took the lead through most of the game. In the final inning, 18U came out swinging to take the game 5-4 and move on to the finals.

In the finals, the 222’s 18U went up against the Washington Ladyhawks. The 2s shut down the Ladyhawks 8-0 to snag the trophy and earn the gold medal title.

“We’ve been going to compete in Vegas for the past 10 years,” said Assistant Coach Donnie Atkinson, “but this is the first time the 18U team has brought home gold. For some this is their final trip with the 2s, and to finish gold at an elite tournament is a huge win.”
