Gas leak sparks late-night evacuation

Two shopping complexes in the Border City were evacuated on Saturday night.

The evacuation was put in place after a male driver struck a gas main at the back of Vern’s Pizza, which then began to leak. The strike was observed by a police officer.

The accident took place around 10:45 p.m.

Both the Southridge Plaza and the plaza holding the Lloydminster Co-op Marketplace were evacuated as emergency services contained the area. Several intersections were also closed, including the intersections of Highway 17 with 36 Street and 40 Street.

The leak was shut down by an ATCO worker around 11:30 p.m. No injuries were reported from the incident. The male driver was taken into custody by police, and the investigation is ongoing.
