Masking requirement to be lifted at Alberta Health Services facilities https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/58596/news/masking-requirement-to-be-lifted-at-alberta-health-services-facilities/ Thu, 15 Jun 2023 22:08:07 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=58596

Masking will no longer be required in Alberta Health Services facilities as of June 19. This includes all facilities and contracted sites such as Alberta Precision Laboratories, Covenant Health, CapitalCare, and Carewest.

The requirement will no longer be in place for patients and visitors, as well as AHS staff including physicians, midwives, students, volunteers, and contractors.

“The decision to rescind the current requirement for continuous masking was made based on a number of factors, including declining COVID-19 cases, testing positivity rate, wastewater data and hospital admission rates for respiratory illnesses in Alberta, as well as consultation with stakeholders including patients, families, advisory councils, clinicians and frontline managers,” reads a news release from AHS.

The health authority says it respects the choice to voluntarily wear a mask and encourages people to continue to wear it if they wish.

“AHS continues to encourage visitors or designated family support persons who have had respiratory symptoms to wait to visit loved ones until 10 days after symptom onset, and all visitors and support persons are recommended to mask when visiting symptomatic patients or residents,” the news release says.

Masks will still be available at facilities for those who want to wear them.

First Lloydminster all-inclusive park one step closer to reality https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/58579/featured/first-lloydminster-all-inclusive-park-one-step-closer-to-reality/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 21:17:24 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=58579

A $50,000 donation from Co-Op's Community Spaces program will see the first all-inclusive park space get built in the City of Lloydminster.

Set to be built in the Aurora neighbourhood, the approximately 2,840 square metre play structure will include a splash pad and shelter, with the funding going towards to the purchase inclusive and accessible playground features to help ensure children of all ages and abilities can access the area with ease.

Land Sales Coordinator with the City of Lloydminster, Wendy Wagner, says it's a day long in the making, and should be ready to welcome kids and families from across the city by the spring of next year.

"We wanted to raise the bar and make something that was for everybody in the community to be able to participate in community spaces, and education and programming in our spaces outside," she says.

"We are doing a site walk, and then the equipment is ordered, so we will start breaking ground in the middle or end of August, and all the services in by the end of September. It will be up and running in Spring 2024 at 100 per cent."

West Family Connections Executive Director Sherri Husch-Foote says they're thrilled to be able to steward the grant funding into what she believes is something foundational for not only the development of children, but the development of inclusive environments in the community.

"It's critical for families in our community; having a park that is on the Saskatchewan side that provides accessibility from a transportation perspective is really important," she says.

"It was really key for us in the development of our early years family resource centre programming to have a Saskatchewan park that is not only accessible from a play aspect, but a transportation and feasibility for families to get to,"

A 42-year-old Lloydminster man is facing charges following an investigation into drug trafficking in the area.

The Lloydminster RCMP says the investigation began last month, and resulted in officers conducting a traffic stop resulting in the seizure of 47 grams of what is believed to be meth, as well as a handgun style bb gun, brass knuckles, and various items that police describe as drug paraphernalia.

Authorities say the traffic stop also resulted in a search warrant being issued for a local home, where police allegedly found further evidence of drug trafficking. Subsequently, 42-year-old Christopher Ironstand has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Cooler temperatures, scattered showers lend a hand in battle against wildfires in parts of Alberta https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/58088/featured/cooler-temperatures-scattered-showers-lend-a-hand-in-battle-against-wildfires-in-parts-of-alberta/ Sun, 07 May 2023 23:31:01 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=58088

Alberta Wildfire officials are hoping mother nature will work with firefighters as they continue to battle over two dozen out-of-control wildfires across Alberta. As of 3 p.m. Sunday, 108 active wildfires were reported on the provincial dashboard, with 30 of them listed as out of control.

Executive Director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency Colin Blair says approximately 30,000 people have been evacuated from regions across central and northwestern Alberta, and while many are curious as to what they will be returning home to, a full assessment is still very much a work in progress.

"I want to stress that many of you want to know the extent of damage, at this time, reports are still coming in," he said during a media availability Sunday.

"In some cases, ongoing smoke and fire conditions prevent us from fully assessing property loss, and until we can do that we are limited in the details we can provide. We know structures have been lost, but our priority is protecting lives and dealing with the emergency response first and foremost."

However, some good news came in the form of rain in the northwestern part of the province on Sunday, with regions like Fox Creek, approximately 2 and a half hours from Edmonton, receiving scattered amounts of precipitation for much of the morning and afternoon.

"It did have an impact on fire behaviour today in that area. It allowed firefighters to work on the areas of some wildfires they haven't been able to get close to because of extreme wildfire behaviour," says Christie Tucker with Alberta Wildfire.

"We are expecting this trend to continue over the next couple of days with cooler temperatures and higher humidity helping firefighters who are working in the south and central parts of the province," Tucker adds.

Forest area fire ban, OHV restriction issued as 70+ wildfires reported across Alberta https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/58045/featured/forest-area-fire-ohv-restriction-issued-as-70-wildfires-reported-across-alberta/ Fri, 05 May 2023 17:37:51 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=58045

A fire and off-highway vehicle (OHV) restriction is in effect for all Forest Protection Areas across Alberta due to extreme fire danger. During a fire ban, all existing permits in a forest area are suspended, and no new fire permits will be issued.

All outdoor wood fires are banned, including wood campfires on public lands, wood campfires on private land, and provincial campgrounds. All off-highway vehicle use on public lands, including designated trails is prohibited as well. Propane and natural gas-powered appliances, as well as indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor are still allowed under the restriction.

Alberta Wildfire officials say as of the morning of May 5th, 78 wildfires were reported across the province, already burning upwards of 25,000 hectares of land.
