Autism awareness event returning to Lloydminster

An event to spread awareness of autism is coming to the Servus Sports Centre honouring Autism Awareness Month. Saturday, April 13 will be an opportunity to promote awareness and acceptance of those affected by autism spectrum disorder.

From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., there will be a number of activities for people to join in. Crafting, balloons, food and games will be present for youth with ASD to have some fun together. Melissa Latos, an occupational therapist with the SHA, says the event is also for networking and support the families of those with ASD.

“It’s coming together to show support for all those families with someone who has autism in their lives. It’s a great opportunity for parents to meet each other, meet other parents with kids who have autism and network together. Most importantly, it’s an event for the kids to just run around, and play, and have fun, and just be kids,” says Latos.

The event happens annually each April and aims to give the community an understanding of autism. Latos says that last year’s event was well attended, and hopes for the same again in 2019. She says it’s free to the public and is a great way for the community to show its support.
