Cold Lake's Cheer Force Jets is on it's way to opening a gym in the Border City.

Head coach and owner Viola McNeil says the company will be expanding into the city after parents were informed that Cheer Legacy in Lloydminster permanently closed their doors.

“Unfortunately, they’ve closed during this COVID-19 crisis and some of the cheer parents have reached out to me. They have kids that are really invested in the sport and were devastated to hear that their gym was closing. We’ve been working with them to come up with a plan to help them out and we’re really looking forward to expanding into Lloydminster.”

Some of the Lloydminster athletes have already begun training virtually with the Jets which McNeil says can be challenging.

“The biggest portion of our sports is stunting which is lifting and throwing people into the air. It’s typically done in groups of four to five people. Obviously we can’t do that right now but we’ve been working on strength training so the girls can keep up with the skills and will be ready when the gym is ready to open.”

McNeil is in the process of getting a lease for a gym in the city and hopes to provide programming before the season starts in September. The Cheer Force Jets offers cheerleading, tumbling and ninja classes as well as recreational and competitive team classes from ages 18 months to adult.

“Ideally, we would be able to train through the summer to work on getting new skills before placing everybody into teams in September. We’re just waiting to see what happens with COVID-19 to see whether we can do summer training or not.”

The company started in Cold Lake in February 2017 with 15 athletes in their program. In the following years, the number of athletes grew to over 60 in the next year and about 200 in 2019 after opening a full-time location in Cold Lake.

Competitive teams take part in competitions in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. McNeil hopes to have both teams go into the same competitions to help them bond with each other.

Registrations can be found on the website which will be updated when more details on the expansion are completed.

Kalie’s #SkiNorthAB Adventure https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/30304/on-air/kalies-snowseekers-adventure/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 19:40:53 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=30304

Hey friends, it's Kalie here!

This weekend I went on a SnowSeekers expedition and got to discover some sweet spots for winter adventures here in our backyards for #SkiNorthAB

First stop: Kinosoo in Cold Lake

Just a heads up my dudes, if you grab a season pass for next year, you can use it for the rest of this season too! Bonus!

Anyway, it was so sunny and warm this past weekend I thought there's no way Kinosoo was going to be open. BOY WAS I WRONG.

They make their own snow, they're like freaking Oprah!

They've actually made so much snow they'll be open till April 6th!

Couple other gems about Kinosoo:

1: Perfect spot if you got some wee ones who want to learn to ski or snowboard. Plus there's lessons, so you can ditch them for a few hours and get some ride time in yourself (heck yeah).

2: One of their lifts is so long it actually takes you into Saskatchewan.

3: Their food is actually good and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

4: The parking lot is close. So you don't have to worry about taking everything with you and having to walk in your awkward ski/snowboard boots.

Second stop: Hamilton House B&B

The Hamilton House B&B was about 10 minutes from Kinosoo

This wasn't just another room in the owners house, this was our own apartment! Complete with Netflix, board games, books, fireplace and your own washroom!

Side note: the owner, Debbie was an absolute dream! She was so incredibly nice and accommodating. When we got there she put together snacks for us

SNACKS!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry for the grody flash picture, but I was so excited I had to take a picture of it haha

They also have 14 KMs of cross country trails if you wanna give 'em a go, they also do weddings in the summer and it looks like the perfect spot!

Stop three: Beckie Scott Nordic Centre in Vermilion

First off, Beckie Scott is a complete bad-ass. She's been in the Olympics 3 times, is Canada's first cross-country Olympic Medalist and is actually from Vermilion!

The day I went her mom was just hanging out, doing some cross-country skiing herself and walking her dog Bella. No big deal.

We had Todd and Sandra from the Vermilion Nordic Ski Club take us out. I've been skiing before, I thought it was going to be pretty straight forward. UHHHHHHHH nope! It's actually harder than it looks, but after 15-ish minutes I actually started to get the hang of it! Plus it was a sweet workout!

Here's a little video I put together of the weekend!

And one more time so you don't forget,

Calgary Transit Buses Arrive In Cold Lake https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/1402/news/calgary-transit-buses-arrive-in-cold-lake/ Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:47:12 +0000 http://1061.thegoatrocks.ca/news/?p=1402
Six former Calgary Transit buses have arrived in Cold Lake. The buses will make up the city's new transit system, to be launched later this year. Early stages of the system will use only two buses, but city officials say that the extra vehicles will give them room to expand. Chief Administrative Officer, Kevin Nagoya, said the buses were a bargain. Combined with tires and spare parts, they cost the city just $44,000.

Ed Rondeau Want To Stop Craig Copeland’s PC Nomination https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/1368/news/ed-rondeau-want-to-stop-craig-copelands-pc-nomination/ Mon, 09 Feb 2015 16:56:10 +0000 http://1061.thegoatrocks.ca/news/?p=1368
Bonnyville Reeve Ed Rondeau is encouraging his constituents to vote against Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland in the upcoming Progressive Conservative Party nomination. The nomination for the riding of Bonnyville-Cold Lake is happening February 21st, and Copeland is one of only two candidates in the running. Rondeau says that over the last eight years, Copeland and Cold Lake City Council have tried to take money and land from Bonnyville through annexation and a proposed union with the City. Rondeau says the district should remain independent, and encourages his constituents to become PC members to make sure Copeland is not nominated to run.

Cold Lake Plans Air Force Splash Park https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/1359/news/cold-lake-plans-air-force-splash-park/ Fri, 06 Feb 2015 16:24:22 +0000 http://1061.thegoatrocks.ca/news/?p=1359
Cold Lake has voted to oversee the construction of a 4 Wing funded splash park. The park will be built next to the JJ Parr Sports Center, provided that the city and the air force can agree on a site. Cold Lake already has an $800,000 splash park under construction at Kinosoo Beach, and they say they will use the same materials and contractor for the 4 Wing project. The base has raised $500,000 for their park, and say it will have an air force theme. Both parks are scheduled to be completed in time for summer.

Cold Lake Will No Longer Apply To United Way Grant Funding https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/1343/news/cold-lake-will-no-longer-apply-to-united-way-grant-funding/ Thu, 05 Feb 2015 18:35:12 +0000 http://1061.thegoatrocks.ca/news/?p=1343
Cold Lake is streamlining its grant program. The City says it is dissolving the Family and Community Support Services Grants, while simultaneously cancelling its application to United Way funding. The city says that giving out grants to local charities, while applying for grants from the United Way - an organization that funds local charities - creates redundancies. Cold Lake will continue to fund local charities through the FCSS Special Grant Project, which provides non-profits with up to $2,000.
