Cash for community programs in Alberta

Forty one community and police based programs are getting a boost from the federal government. Over 9.1 million dollars in grants over three years will be allocated to help Albertans suffering from domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual exploitation and assault. This is in addition to 10.4 million in other commitments to the causes. Kevin McNichol, Executive Director of HomeFront, the Society for the Prevention of Domestic Violence says the $450,000 from the Victims of Crime fund will allow HomeFront’s caseworkers to help about 3,000 victims and their 3,150 children over the next three years to break the cycle of abuse. And Andrea Burkhart, Executive Director of The Action Coalition on Human Trafficking says Alberta remains the only provincial non-governmental organization that is responding to human trafficking in this way, and the support of the Alberta Government is crucial for this work.
