Local Student Wins Big at National Skills Competition

Meagan Lee, a grade 11 student from Lloyd Comp, is returning home from Winnipeg with a little more weight in her luggage due to a gold medal win at the Skills Canada competition in the Mechanical CADD category.

“It was really surprising actually because when I heard bronze and silver I’m like oh I didn’t make it then but then I was called, it was a lot like provincials actually.”

Meagan credits her success to “a lot of hard work, problem solving and practicing.”

“It was a great experience overall, it was quite exciting to go to Winnipeg,” she adds.

Her teacher was also quite proud of her.

“It’s awesome, she did very well. She’s an amazing young lady. She was competing against the best in the country so that’s quite an accomplishment,” says Don Yusep, a Design Studies and Drafting Teacher at LCHS.

Two other students, Eric Stephens and Nolan Rewega also competed at nationals after placing gold at provincials as well and while the didn’t place, Yusep said that doesn’t matter.

“They both did really well and I think whether they medaled or not, I think it’s a really great experience. They goes a team, they’re called team Alberta and just that experience going as that group and that team experience.”

Meagan hopes to compete again next year.
