Saskatchewan Provincial Parks Becoming More Accessible

Beach wheelchairs are making Saskatchewan Provincial Parks more accessible. This spring SaskParks purchased 5 chairs to be used at Saskatchewan Landing, Moose Mountain, Good Spirit Lake, Candle Lake and Meadow Lake. However, they say they will bring the chairs to other parks.

“They’re all over the province and they can be moved from park to park, if people call ahead and reserve one we can move them to different provincial parks around the province,” says Ken Cheveldayoff the Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport.

While the chairs are more for the sand, Cheveldayoff says it’s okay if they get wet. The chairs are free to use and are designed to be versatile.

“They’re the types that can be used for both children and adults. They’re quite adaptable and very safe, of course,” says Cheveldayoff.

He adds the response has been, “phenomenal.”

“People have been very, very interested, many park goers have said they are going to tell other people that they know, that they are available.”

There are no formal plans to get more yet, but Cheveldayoff says, “we’ll review it at the end of the year but based on the support we’ve seen so far, we’ll most likely be moving ahead with some additional ones.”

One woman shared her families experience on the SaskParks Facebook Page.

To reserve a chair, SaskParks says to give the Provincial Park you are going to a call at least a week prior to your visit and they will try to reserve a chair for you.
