One Dead Following Officer Involved Shooting

Update: The female suspect in the vehicle has been charged. The 28 year old is facing a possession of property obtained by crime. She is also facing two robbery charges not in relation to Saturday’s incident.

An independent external investigation is ongoing following an officer involved shooting in North Battleford over the weekend in which one person was killed.

On Saturday night, police were responding to reports of a person being chased by a vehicle and being shot at by the occupants and engaged in a short pursuit. The pursuit ended after the suspect vehicle rammed the police car, leaving it immobilized according to the RCMP.

An officer then shot at the vehicle injuring the driver, police say life-saving measures were used however 22 year old Brydon Whitsone from Onion Lake died on the way to the hospital. A female suspect in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. She was taken to hospital for treatment and then released back into custody.

One RCMP member also suffered minor injuries in the pursuit and was taken to hospital. He has since been treated and released.

The Regina Police Service will be conducting the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Whitstone. Additionally, the RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer. The initial complaint of a male being chased and shot at continues to be investigated by the RCMP.
