Unity RCMP warning about STARS donations scam

Unity RCMP say they have seen a “dramatic increase” in the number of complaints about lottery scams over the last month.

Police say one of the biggest was from scammers claiming to represent STARS Air Ambulance telling people that they have won new vehicles, as well as cash prizes ranging from $30,000 up to $175,000. The people doing the scam then ask residents to send them money to claim the prize.

Residents are being warned to watch out for these scams. Warning signs include them asking for money to claim the prize, which the RCMP says no real lottery system does. They also say people should check with STARS or any other lottery company to see if they have won anything.

The RCMP says if someone believes they are being scammed they should under no circumstances give them personal details or send money. Residents are instead told to hang up, record the number calling, then advise your local police department or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
