Lakeland College opens Indigenous student lounge

Lakeland College has unveiled a indigenous student lounge at their Lloydminster campus. The lounge is a dedicated space for indigenous students and provides services to help them ease their transition into post secondary education.

Manager of Indigenous Support Services for Lakeland College Clint Chocan says that most students who leave their communities for the first time have culture shock and this lounge is one way to combat those challenges.

“To provide support and understanding for these students to adjust to the numerous adaptations they are faced with.”

The lounge will house the indigenous student council, the new Elders and Residents Program and an area designated to spiritual practices. Chocan believes that this will be a place for students to build a support system and connect with other indigenous youth.

“We expect them to, to develop is confidence and a network within the room. It’s healthy to extend their network with the rest of the Lakeland community.”

There are approximately 125 indigenous students attending the Lloyminster campus and the college hopes this will be part of the reconciliation process.
